The new European Union regulation for organic production 2018/848, effective from January 2022 for operators in Europe and for operators in third countries from January 2025, will mean a big change in the current processes of organic producers in third countries.
The new Deforestation Law, which obliges companies to verify that products sold in the EU have not been produced on deforested land, came into force on June 29, 2023 with 18 months to implement it.
With this law, the EU wants to guarantee consumers that the products they buy do not contribute to the destruction of forests and their biodiversity, and thus reduce the EU’s contribution to climate change and violation of indigenous peoples’ human rights.
Companies trading in forest risk products are obliged to exercise due diligence to assess their supply chain, which means an arduous task to gather the necessary documentation.
